DEFINITION

Classification: 411/141

Locking dog or pawl carried by bolt head or nut and engaging substructure:

(under subclass 132) Device wherein the member is, in whole or in part, a tonguelike element which is accommodated in, attached to or otherwise held by the bolt head or nut and which is pivotably, yieldably, or otherwise movable, upon commencement of unthreading rotation of the bolt or nut, into a position in which it engages the substructure in such a manner as to either block or at least severely restrict movement in that direction.

(1) Note. The tonguelike element assumes a substructure-penetrating attitude when called upon to block movement.

(2) Note. While engagement of the tonguelike element with the substructure takes place somewhat prior to reaching the tightened position of the bolt head or nut, it does not, generally, offer significant resistance to rotation in the tightening direction.

(3) Note. In some instances, a single bolt head or nut may be provided with more than one tonguelike element.
