340.~ Mode locked

DEFINITION

Classification: 359/340

Mode locked:

(under subclass 333) Subject matter wherein the energy content of each state (i.e., mode) of an oscillating system (e.g., laser) is internally modulated in a particular field pattern and is one of the possible resonant frequencies of the system to selectively give rise to energy bursts of high peak power and short duration which can be in the picosecond domain.

(1) Note. This laser, referred to as a mode-locked laser could also be in a continuous wave mode or a pulsed mode.
