Phase modulation:

(under subclass 245) Subject matter wherein the normal zero phase of a constant amplitude optical wave (i.e., carrier wave) is shifted by an angle proportional to the amplitude of the applied signal (i.e., modulating signal).

(1) Note. A sinusoidal signal of zero phase will have a zero amplitude at the intersection of the x-y axis.
