DEFINITION

Classification: 148/323

Chill cast:

(under subclass 321) Stock material which has been cast in such a manner that substantially all the carbon in the iron is combined with the iron rather than allowed to precipitate out as inclusions of free graphite carbon.

(1) Note. The presence of combined carbon and absence of free graphite causes the chill cast iron to have a white

rather than a grey appearance when fractured. The recitation that a cast iron is "white" will be taken to mean that it has been chill cast. So called "mottled iron" which contains areas of white iron mixed with grey iron will also be classified hereunder.
