(under subclass 193) Subject matter wherein changes in the strength of an electric field applied to a liquid crystal cell result in changes in the spacing of a grating formed in the liquid crystal material (wherein the liquid crystal alone forms the diffraction element) or wherein a liquid crystal material fills spaces between equidistant parallel lines which form a diffraction grating.
