(under subclass 195) Process in which the solid settles to the bottom of a mass of the contact liquid in a settling tank or the solid rises to the top of a mass of the contact liquid in a flotation tank due to the difference in density of the solid and the contact liquid, with the layer of the contact liquid containing the solid being separated from the remainder of the mass of contact liquid.
