RATIO CHANGE BY EXPANSION OR COMPRESSION OF FLEXIBLE FRICTION SURFACE:

(under the class definition) Subject matter wherein at least one of said surfaces of a part in rolling contact is formed of pliable material; and wherein means are provided to change the radial distance from the axis of rotation of said part to its rolling contact surface by expanding or contracting its pliable surface so as to vary the rotational velocity of the output body divided by the rotational velocity of the input body. [figure] [caption] A friction or tractive drive comprises at least two relatively rotatable members in torque transmitting relationship, the tractive surfaces of the members having disposed thereon a tractant selected from the following groups (A) or (B): A. A tractant comprising a

hydrocarbon dimer of an alkyladeamantane and/or alkyladamantanol of the C12[end subscrpt]-C19 range containing one to three alkyl groups of the C1[end subscrpt]-C2 range, the dimer containing two adamantane nuclei which are linked to each other through an alkylene radical derived from and having the same number of carbon atoms as an alkyl group of the starting material; and B. An ether analogous to a hydrocarbon dimer from group A.
