DEFINITION

Classification: 435/245

Adaptation or attenuation of cells:

(under subclass 243) Processes wherein the virulence of a

microorganism is reduced or a microorganism's ability to propagate on a given substrate is increased or growth requirements are altered by a series of sequential cultivation steps.

(1) Note. The dividing line between adaptation and mutation is that an adapted microorganism will not retain its ability to flourish in a hostile media when cultured in a normal growth media and returned to the hostile media.
