Evanescent wave coupling:

(under subclass 27) Subject matter wherein the desired coupling function is achieved by matching the propagation constants of light travelling in coupled waveguides (also resulting in overlapping evanescent fields).

(1) Note. The structure of evanescent wave couplers often includes the removal of most of the waveguide cladding material in the actual coupling region.
