DEFINITION

BENCH PLANE:

(under the class definition) Device having a base, and a blade having a cutting edge, the blade being associated with the base at a predetermined angle thereto for the purpose of (a) removing wood from the work piece to provide a flat or configured surface thereon; or (b) removing a strip of wood from the workpiece of predetermined cross-section, e.g., toothpick.

(1) Note. In use, the device is usually passed over the workpiece many times to produce the results of (a) above, but only once to provide a result of (b) above.
