DEFINITION

Ratchet wheel or formation and locking pawl:

(under subclass 375) Apparatus wherein the means consist of either (a) a wheel having teeth located on its perimeter, the wheel being rotatably interconnected to the drum, and a pawl which interlocks with the teeth in one direction of the wheel's rotation to prevent movement of the drum and which disengages from the teeth in the other direction of the wheel's rotation to allow movement of the drum, or (b) a stationary ratchet formation having teeth located on its perimeter and a pawl connected to the drum which revolves around an axis when the drum is rotated, the pawl interlocks with the teeth in one direction of its travel to prevent movement of the drum and disengages from the teeth in the other direction of its travel to allow movement of the drum.
