(under subclass 359) Retaining, halting, or retarding means in which the relatively movable engaging part has its operation induced by a variation in tautness (e.g., breaking) of a cable* connected to the load-underlying support surface and wherein this cable both (a) bears a portion of the weight of the load-underlying support surface during its travel along the shaft* and (b) is linked either to the power source or a weight which causes or opposes the travel of the load-underlying support surface in one direction.
