DEFINITION
Classification: 114/4
Floating forts designed to be anchored in harbors usually of circular section and cylindrical or globular in form, and though such forts may have means of propulsion they differ from the general type of warships and form a distinctive class.
(1) Note. These devices differ from turrets in that turrets are fortified structures mounted upon, rotating with, or being elevated upon other structures, while floating batteries form a single structure, being rotated or elevated as a whole.
